I am pleased to report that after our first two sessions, our service learning program is off to a great start.  Thanks for all that you do at home to support our kids having these wonderful service learning experiences!

˙A Big Thank You to Patti Maier for designing and creating the new Library sign. It is a beautiful autumn tree on one side and a spring tree on the other. Take a look at it—it’s above the east side entry door. Thanks, Patti!

˙Students are not permitted on school grounds before 8:30 am unsupervised at any time. If there are extenuating circumstances, please contact Ms Parker so we can set up a safe and supervised plan.

˙We now sell Tree Top juices for $.75 and Nestle Quick drink for $1.25 in the mornings and at lunch.

˙Used Book Sale—The Norine Gann Salmon Bay School Library is holding a used book sale! We have been given a large quantity of fiction titles (Terry Brooks, Michael Crichton, Stephen King, etc.) as well as many paperbacks for kids. We will sell books for cheap! Proceeds will benefit the library. The sale will take place the same night as Family Poetry Night, Apr 30, in the Library. Come spend a few dollars!

B-I-N-G-O Blowout— It's back. Fri, May 9, 7:00 pm, Cafeteria.  This event is for middle school students and their families. It is a social/fundraiser with cash and other prizes. Volunteers are needed.

2003 "One-of-a-Kind" Auction, Apr 26—Look for announcement coming home in the mail this week. We are relying on our parents to provide "One-of-a-Kind" donations or to ask friends, relatives, or businesses for donations. We would like to see a 100% commitment from our families this year. Lots of volunteers are also needed.

Annual Drive—This week’s total is $9,900. The donations are coming in slowly but continue to come in. Please get your checks in right away—$5, $25, $50, $100, or more! Since we have not reached our goal on the Annual Drive, we will be raising our goal on the Auction in April to $20,000! Mark your calendar for the Auction on Apr 26.

Typically 6th and 7th grade parents organize the picnic and promotion and 8th grade parents organize the cruise. I am also looking for an 8th parent to be part of the picnic and promotion committee. You will not have a job task during the activities, but will serve as an advisor to the committee.

LEEP Summer School Program—Lakeside Educational Enrichment Program (LEEP) coordinators will be at Salmon Bay on Thurs morning, Apr 3, 9:00 in the cafeteria to show a video and answer questions. All interested parents of 8th graders are invited. LEEP dates are June 23 to Aug 1.  Applications are due Apr 16.  All students are encouraged to apply, but the program targets students that need a “boost” to be successful in high school.

˙Collecting Beanie Babies by 4/15—A friend of Ginny's is going to Honduras with a team of doctors, nurses, and plastic surgeons who do a surgery "blitz" for children with cleft palates. They collect beanie babies to take along to the kids. If you can donate, please bring your "babies" to the office.

Jeff’s Note

An important community forum will be held on Thurs, Mar 27, at 7:00 PM in the Salmon Bay School library to discuss the upcoming BTA (Building, Technology, and Academics) Levy to be on the ballot in February of next year.  If approved, this levy will be providing a majority of the funds needed to complete our upper field project.  Please come to find out more and to provide input. Thanks.

Seeking Applicants for part time Middle School Position—Person to work with staff, youth and parents in implementing and facilitating curricula for substance abuse prevention during the school year 03-04. Up to half-time (approximately 20 hours per week).

Looking for a person with the following qualities:

·      Experience in substance prevention abuse helpful but not required.

·      Ability to run small drug/alcohol student extension/discussion groups

·      Ability to relate well with staff, students and parents around a controversial/sensitive topic

·      Energetic/engaging facilitation/ teaching skills

·      Flexible hours, including some evenings
