Ubuntu: It is to say, "My humanity is caught up, is inextricably bound up with yours." We belong in a bundle of life. We say, "A person is a person through other persons." It is not, "I think, therefore I am." It is rather: " I am human because I belong. I participate, I share." A person with ubuntu is open and available to others, affirming of others, does not feel threatened that others are able and good, for he or she has a proper self-assurance that comes from knowing that he or she belongs in a greater whole and is diminished when others are humiliated or diminished, when others are tortured or oppressed, or treated as if they were less than who they are.

Seattle Public Schools Department of Equity and Race Relations web site contains links to resources, including the Equity Event Calendar for the Seattle School District.
The Mavin Foundation, located here in Seattle, is the nation's leading organization that builds healthy communities that celebrate and empower mixed heritage people and families.
Un-Teaching Anti-Racism is an article about the trouble people have attempting to find and understand the language needed for discussing diversity issues and is Seattle Public Schools specific.
Barbara Ehrenreich's web site for her Book Nickel and Dimed on (Not) Getting By in America. This powerful book is written by a middle class woman trying to live as a member of the working poor. Interviews with the author are included.
The Mandala Center. This group visited our school for a parent education night in May 2005 and lead us in a series of activities from Theatre of the Oppressed .
Class Matters. This is a powerful website on class issues - taboo subject in our country.
