Parent Education Night

·         Irene contacted Mona Mendoza, CRAB member, who suggested working on How to be an ally and a Diversity Wheel.  She could do it on the 7th and charges $100/hr.

·         Lynda talked with two CRAB members Barb Yasui and Theressa Lenear.  They could also do it on the 7th.  They would do whatever we would like around white privilege.  Their fee would be what we could afford, which they would roll back into CRAB.

·         Walter said Gwen Jones, who teaches multicultural studies at Antioch, would be interested.  He also talked with Ricardo Hidalgo, who would be interested in being on a panel, should we ever have one.  Both talked about the importance of doing something on going.

·         Deborah suggested it would be great to have several nights on white privilege and how to be an ally, with a different focus area each night.

·         Priscilla thought we would get more parent interest if our focus were on the learning environment and children.  For example, how do children adapt to a diverse school climate?

·         The discussion meandered into events the fall.  Jeff suggested that we could do an all school event, including children that would be around how to talk with your kids about race.  Three different ages would be targeted: K-2, 3-5, 6-8.  Then there would be small groups from there, with parents and kids talking about race.  Walter really liked the way the FLASH (sex education) parent nights were handled.

·         Another possible event is a professor, Ratnesh Nagda that Jennifer had. Here is the website for the Intergroup Dialogues: http://www.depts.washington.edu/sswweb/idea/index.html Perhaps he could come to a Diversity Committee meeting if we want to meet him.

·         We decided on the following activities: March is Parent Ed. Night.  April and June we will read articles.  And in May we will plan September.  September will be a parent/child event.

·         Format of the night.

·         Barb Yasui and Theressa Lenear will be our presenters. Lynda will contact them.

·         Diversity Committee members will arrive that night at 5:30 pm.

·         Julia) will ask Coho Kids if they can provide childcare that night.  It will be free to parents, donations accepted.  We will order out pizza for the children.

·         The event will start at 6 and go to 8:30.

·         From 6-6:30, will be dinner for adults.

·         We will provide a cold cut tray, drinks, plates and cups (Jennifer will handle this.)  We have a budget of $7 per person for food.  The committee members will bring dessert.

·         From 6:30-8:30 will be the facilitated discussion.

·         We will have a presentation-type board/table at the meeting, with a visual aid that explains more about who we are and what are next activities will be.  The area will include a sign-up sheet for the article reading groups, as well as copies of the first articles to take, and copies of th4 other article to peruse.  (Deborah will handle this.)
