The Diversity Committee is open to all parents and guardians who have children attending Salmon Bay School, and teachers and staff members employed by Salmon Bay School, who want to participate on the Diversity Committee.

Diversity planning meeting dates and times:  To encourage participation, we will alternate our diversity committee planning meetings times monthly at 6:30 and 7:00 pm.

Diversity focus group meetings: In order to focus on developing projects in detail, and provide task and moral support to project leaders, we will hold at least one daytime focus meeting each month.  Dates and times will be posted in the weekly bulletins.  This also encourages greater participation on the part of those who cannot attend evening meetings.

Minutes from all meetings will be posted on the school website.

Diversity Committee Summit Reconvening

Jane and Irene are working on a reconvening event that will take place in January, 2006. Based on the information and data that we gathered at the Summit last May, we plan to invite people to gather together less formally to talk and plan other meetings.  The initial goals are:

Diversity Artworks:

There is still a great deal of uncertainty around DAW and their mural project.

·        Kimberly will follow up with Judy and report back to us.

Contemporary American Indian library books project:

Ginny gave a hands-on presentation, familiarizing the diversity committee with the many wonderful books by and about American Indians that we already have, and explained the areas where she would like to update and fill in the gaps with books in this area.

·        Non-fiction—a variety of different tribes—a series that reflects the breadth of American Indian Tribes and Nations

·        Biography—Today’s Native American Leaders

·        Picture books

·        Historical fiction

·        Emphasis on Pacific NW Tribes and Nations

There is teacher interest in having hiring storytellers and other story related activity materials for students.  Can we set aside money, or procure mini-grants for teacher curriculum needs?

Tasks:

Next Meeting November 21, 2005:

Jodee wants to be on the agenda to discuss the relationship of Salmon Bay Diversity Committee and if we are focused in an on-going way.  And if we are focused in an on-going way, how is it aligned with the district’s goals and issues of diversity?

Diversity Parent Ed. Movie Night

Several people stayed to watch the movie Killing Us Softly. All who watched were inspired and excited to share the film, (and its potent message, concept, and ideas, that the media’s image of girls and women have a very precise influence on our society as a whole, and quite at the expense and detriment to girls and women) with other parents, teachers, and staff.
