Update on Salmon Bay’s Race and Equity Committee – Jodee
The Race and Equity Committee is comprised of staff and teachers who are working with all teachers to identify barriers that exist at Salmon Bay for students of color.

Their goal is to work with all teachers to identify the students of color and to track how they are doing.

Five support staff are forming “cohort groups” – 3-4 Middle School students per group.  The students with a discipline history or who are not reaching their potential have been chosen.  The cohort group leader will mentor the students, build relationships, and reach out to the families.

Mentorship or lunch program for kids of color – Kelly
Kelly has spoken with someone at the Mavin Foundation about starting a lunch program at Salmon Bay, called “Generation Mix,” where bi-racial students, multi-racial students, students from inter-racial families and allies would meet over lunch.

It was suggested that the educator/facilitator from Mavin come to all three lunches, so that a group at each grade grouping could be formed.

Kelly will talk further with Mavin to iron out some of the details and discuss what costs would be involved.

Update on the Mini Grants that have been submitted – Irene, Kelly, Jane

The Diversity Committee submitted two mini grants:

1.       A request for books on Asian-Americans and Multi-racial families.
We did not submit a dollar amount.  We wanted Linda to receive all the library grant money at this time.  We wanted to be on the radar of the mini-grant appointers.  We will be submitting a detailed list of books and dollar amounts at the next mini grant round.

2.       A request for money to buy the “Chasing Daybreak” DVD and a membership to the Mavin Foundation.
This film is appropriate for families, so we will plan one or two family movie nights.  And then hopefully follow through with an evening facilitated by someone from Mavin.  Kelly will look into the cost of having someone come to Salmon Bay.

Book Fair Wish List – Jane
Linda provided five lists of books that we could put on the wish list.
Jane will ask Linda to narrow down the list for the Book Fair.

GLBTQ evening event with Lisa Love – Irene
Irene has spoken with Lisa Love from the Seattle School District’s Health Education Office. They are starting to plan an evening panel discussion. The thought is to have Salmon Bay alumni (current high school students) who were part of the GSA participate on the panel.  The evening would be open to parents and students. It would also be an opportunity to display our library’s GLBTQ collection.

The target dates for this event are during one of our meeting dates – Jan 10th or Feb 7th.  Irene will schedule the event with Lisa Love.

Parent night with Anthony – Irene
Irene will continue to discuss this event with Anthony.  Nothing has been set yet.

Poster update – Kelly
Kelly and Irene are continuing to research how much money was spent and how many posters were purchased to see if there are missing posters.
Irene will contact past and present FOSBE treasurers.
Kelly will talk to Kimberly.

After school drama program – Kelly
Kelly spoke with Jeff Clark. Denny Middle School already has an after-school drama program.  Kelly may talk with Jeff more about other ways to connect our two student bodies.

Multicultural Dinner
Megan emailed:

At this point, I am going to advertise to the school families to bring something of their upbringing or heritage, label where it is from and perhaps what their favorite memory of it is.  I have been racking my brain about entertainment but have realized that the small play from the Spanish club and perhaps a good old game of indoor soccer in the gym, is just what will have to do.
