Present

Mia Parker, Julia Berg, Irene Haddow, Jeff Clark, Deborah Vandermar,

If your name is in bold that means you have a task!  (Irene, Mia, Walter, Lynda, Julia, Jeff J)

Parent Education Night

·         People reported back on their efforts.  Jennifer Geist sent information, via Jeff.  Irene is trying to contact Mona Mendoza who works at Meany Middle, and will continue to do so.

·         Mia expressed a parent’s concern that March was already very busy and perhaps our Parent Education Night might be an overload.  Mia will get back to us on this.  \

·         We decided to postpone our decision until our January 22 meeting.  So we need everyone to come with their ideas, suggestions, potential facilitators in hand

·         Walter and Lynda were not at the meeting but both had said they would interview contacts for facilitators and get back to us – so hopefully we will see them in January!

Next Meeting

·         Will be at the school district office at 3rd and Lander – John Stanford Center Educational Excellence.  Jeff has a key and can get us in.  Jeff will reserve a room.

Curriculum Alignment

·         Said Jeff, as a school we are creating a curriculum alignment spread sheet.  This will help teachers see how well they are doing and also highlight areas for potential improvement.  Jeff asked for the committee’s help to polish the draft suggestions in the area of Diversity, Multicultural, and Anti-Bias.

·         Here is what we came up with:

·         1.  Students view concepts, issues, events, and themselves from diverse cultural* perspectives.

·         2.  Student clarify their cultural* identifies effectively.

·         3.  Students gain self-understanding by viewing themselves from the perspective of other cultures*.

·         4.  Students make reflective decisions on cultural* issues.

·         5.  Students are able to take personal, social or civic actions to promote social justice.

·         Anywhere you see an * it stands for gender, race, sexual orientation, ableness, age, class, religion or family structure.

Resources for our library

·         Irene will bring suggested magazines next time.

·         Carita (via e-mail) suggested that we buy  the Washington State Association for Multicultural Education (WSAME) is preparing the 2003 edition of its Multicultural Resource Directory. The directory is distributed throughout the state. It provides information for public and private schools, colleges, universities, agencies, organizations, parent groups, businesses and others who seek presenters, trainers, consultants, field trips and other resources to address their multicultural, diversity needs.”  The committee agreed, as long as the cost is under $100.  Julia will follow up with this.

Curriculum Issues – suggested protocol if concerns:

·         First, talk to the teacher – most concerns about curriculum are solved at this level.

·         Second, talk to Jeff – he’s in chard of personnel and curriculum issues.

·         If still not satisfied, talk to Colleen Oliver, Director of K-8 and Middle School for Seattle Public Schools.  She is Jeff’s supervisor.
