Volunteering >> General Information >> Elementary Family Involvement >>Middle School Family Involvement
At Salmon Bay we see family involvement as one of the key elements to helping all children achieve socially, emotionally, and academically. While this volunteerism can take many different forms, both in-class and in other support roles, it strengthens us as a community as well as supporting our students and staff.
HOW MANY HOURS DO PEOPLE VOLUNTEER?
The simple answer is that we ask all families to donate at least 40 hours per
year at the elementary level and 25 hours per year at the middle school level.
But that doesn't really tell the whole story. Many families can - and do - contribute
hundreds of hours of school support time (and, every hour is truly appreciated!)
while other families are strapped for time and can only manage the minimum and
that's fine, too. The point of volunteering is not only to make this a great
place for students to learn and grow, but also to make everyone - adults, students,
and staff, feel connected. Family must decide what level of volunteerism fits
their situation and style.
WHAT DO VOLUNTEERS DO IN THE
CLASSROOM?
Volunteers work in the classroom as aides. This can mean working with individual
students or working with small groups of students on academic subjects such
as math, science, reading and writing, while at other times we make use of parent/guardians
for special in-class projects. If a parent is a skilled woodworker and is willing
and able to work with students, he/she may find himself in the middle of a loft
project as one parent is doing this year. Or, he/she may help students with
smaller individual building projects such as birdhouses. One parent who is fluent
in Russian has become a mainstay in that language and culture class. The same
thing would be true of a seamstress, potter, or adult skilled in other academic
or hands-on fields.
WHAT DO VOLUNTEERS DO OUTSIDE
THE CLASSROOM?
Supporting Salmon Bay is a full time job! The work definitely doesn't stop when
the bell rings. We have committees that work on everything from site improvements
to library grants to diversity issues. Adults are needed for camp and outdoor
education experiences at all grade levels, too! If fundraising is your cup-o-tea
then you're in luck because there are auctions at both the elementary and middle
school levels, raffles, a fun run, and even a direct giving campaign! There
is definitely something for everyone when it comes to getting involved at Salmon
Bay!
HOW DO I BEGIN VOLUNTEERING?
To become a volunteer at Salmon Bay one must fill out a Washington State Patrol
form which is then run through a screening process to check for criminal history.
Once this is cleared, all volunteers attend an orientation which both gives
them guidelines for their work as well as an introduction to where things are
in the building. All volunteers (and visitors) must stop at the main office
to sign-in when entering the building and wear a 'volunteer' ID tag while working
in the building. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please call
the main office at 252-1720 and they will connect you with a volunteer coordinator
who will help you get started.
