Computer technology is used every day by students at Salmon Bay School. All middle school and many upper elementary school students use computers for word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, and the Internet. Our library catalog is accessible via the school district's intranet on every computer in our school.
In the summer of 2002, Salmon Bay School (Monroe Building) was completely rewired to the latest standards as part of the levy and grant program of Seattle Public Schools. Teachers received new telephons and voice mail capabilities. In December 2002, new PC's and Macintosh computers were rolled out to replace our older equipment. This infusion of new technology was also a result of levy funding. Many teachers at Salmon Bay School incorporate aspects of technology and computer use in their lessons with students.
In January 2003, every teacher recieved his or her own classroom workstation. These new computers have a variety of software productivity tools, as well as gradebook software, and other tools for teachers. As part of this project, our school received three new network printers, as well as a video projector. These tools make life much more manageable for teachers!
A parent-teacher technology committee works to help the school maintain its technology infrastructure and further its technology goals. For example, technology committee members set up a listserv for distribution of our weekly elementary bulletin and were instrumental in the rollout of our new equipment. For more information, please contact Ginny Allemann at 252-1737 or Joel Maier at 252-1761.
The Norine Gann Library has been in existence since 1999, when Coho Elementary School and New Options Middle School were merged into one school, housed in the Monroe Building in Ballard. Since that time, our library collection has been steadily growing and improving. We are graced with a large library space, with teaching areas as well as a 25-station computer lab. The library is centrally located, and is a place where K-8 students come to enjoy reading and books, learn information skills, and access a variety of resources.
Our library catalog is online, as are all Seattle Public School library catalogs. To access the library catalog from home, go to http://www.seattleschools.org/area/library/catalogs/catalogs.htm and choose Salmon Bay from the middle school list.
Parents and families are welcome in the library. We do have a parent and professional collection that you are welcome to browse. It is housed in the back room of the library. Parents can find books to help their emerging readers practice with in our emergent reader collection, which is shelved on a gorgeous cart in the main library. Stop by and Ginny Allemann and Linda Illman, Salmon Bay Librarians, can show you our growing collection of parenting, education, and emergent reader books.
Volunteering is always an option in the library! Please contact Ginny or Linda at 252-1737 if you are a parent or family member of a student at our school and would like to arrange to volunteer.
Thank you for your support.
